Now that the subpoena has been withdrawn, Houston Indymedia's Nick Cooper has been able to talk openly about what happened with Kevin Bankston, The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Senior Staff Attorney.

2009-09-15 11:40 PM Sheriff Arpaio is no stranger to controversy. Not only is he the biggest proponent of the 287g program in the United States, but he also grabbed national headlines by making prisoners dawn pink underwear, engaging them in forced labor, and housing them in tents in the Arizona heat. With over 2,000 lawsuits against him, Sheriff Arpaio joked about the ongoing investigations and pending lawsuits before a crowd of over 100 attendees this past weekend. The event was a fundraiser for the local anti-immigrant group US Border Watch. Activists also turned out numbers to send a clear message that Sheriff Arpaio is a persona non-grata in the Lone Star state. (audio/mpeg)

Instead, we should be using the model of the "Stockholm Syndrome" to examine ourselves. If we look at some of the info that has been printed this week, such as the "four situations that help explain a victim’s bond with an abuser" we can apply them to ourselves as captives in a global system. Supreme Court Makes Landmark Decision Regarding the Voting Rights Act

2009-06-22 11:03 AM WITH an 8-1 MAJORITY, THE COURT opted OUT OF RULING on the constitutionality of THE 1965 VOTING RIGHTS ACT. At ISSUE WAS Section 5 - A PROVISION THAT requires 16 states, primarily in the SOUTH, to obtain Justice Department approval before making changes to voting requirements. RATHER THAN TACKLE THE BIG QUESTION OF CONTINUED FEDERAL OVERSIGHT TO ENSURE the ENFORCEMENT OF THE 15th Amendment barring states from restricting voter access on the basis of race, JUSTICES COMPROMISED. Today’s ruling ALLOWS EXEMPTIONS FROM SECTION 5. The CASE WAS BROUGHT BY Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District – A small municipality THAT HOLDS elections to select its board of directors The majority opinion, penned by Chief Justice John Roberts claimed that 'we are a very different nation' and as a result the ongoing merit of Section 5 would not be decided. THE LONE DISSENTER JUSTICE Clarence Thomas, WROTE THAT "The violence, intimidation, and subterfuge that led Congress to pass Section 5 ... no longer remains." Supreme Court analysts SAYe today's ruling has the potential to produce the biggest change in U.S. voting law in decades. Since 1982, the Justice Department has challenged more than 2,400 state and local voting changes under Section 5. (audio/mpeg)
