Zine Fest '09 takes place at the Caroline Collective

Zine Fest Houston is an event dedicated to promoting zines, minicomics and other forms of small press, alternative, underground and diy media & art. It is also a grassroots attempt to build the local zine, diy and alternative media scenes and form networks with media creators in other areas.

I dropped by the Caroline Collective, a delightful mostly open space in the museum district on May 16th to check out Zine Fest Houston and the workshops that accompanied it. The organizers of the fest did a great job of pulling together the self-publishers of writing and art on a wide variety of issues that do it for the love of the craft in the Houston area.

I particularly enjoyed the collection of local zines they had on display, going back into the eighties, as well as some of the underground newspapers, and the workshop given by former members of space city news.
