Five days in and still a mess

5 days after ike the makority of Houstonians are without power, and while many people are back to work and school, things are far from back to normal.

Above is damage to the exterior of Rice Cinema, whee Houston IMC has hosted a film series since 2002. The first 3 photos here were taken on Monday, the following 10 are from TODAY, the 17th of Sept. Its hard to do a lot of writing with school started, no power at my apartment, no wireless internet in my neighborhood and a curfew at midnight (which was 9pm on Sunday and Monday). This morning I threw away all the food in our refrigerator and scrubed it out with lysol so it wont be ruined.
I got the chance to bike all over town Tuesday, and the damage from falling signs is everywhere, and power restoration seems spotty and completely random.
We had a small but productive indymedia meeting today at Sedition Books to come up with a strategy for covering the aftermath of ike in Houston and the surrounding region. We'll get more info out about that soon.
There are half a dozen cops and half a dozen customers at Antidote coffee at 8th street and Studemont in the heights (where I am currently). there is now power here but they are running a generator to power wireless internet some of the coffee production machines, and they screened a film earlier outside.
