Harris County Jail Protest

From Jena 6 to Harris County crucifix,—hog tying is the cross; jailers are the killers. To address “hog tying and Black men dying,” Minister Quanel X led throngs of protestors in a rally, Sunday, April 27. Protestors rallied in front of the Harris County jail; lifting their voices in unison, “No justice! No peace!” Among the protestors were the widower of Clarence Freeman; and the mother of Patrick Murphy.

Young Patrick Murphy was gunned down in 2006. Clarence Freeman witnessed the murder. He phoned his wife, and said, “I saw a child get killed, and I’m going to stay on the scene until law enforcement arrives and tell them what I saw.” In Mr. Freeman’s effort to speak for the young victim and bring his murder to the seat of justice; Clarence became a homicide victim of the Harris County Jail. Clarence Freeman went to jail on a hot check and got the death penalty. In 07’ New Years Eve; Clarence and a jailer had an altercation. Clarence was brutally beaten, strangled, choked, and hog tied. Clarence was in LBJ County Hospital for five days before Harris County Sheriff officials contacted his wife. Five days later; Mrs. Freeman became a widower. To add insult to injury peep the video and see the degrading and demeaning memoirs given to her by Harris County Sheriff Department.

In regards to equality, justice, and liberty; this past Tuesday, April 22nd; I celebrated Seder Passover with Houston’s Congregation Beth Israel. Rabbi and guest speakers passionately elaborated that we are to fight for the lesser; those whom justice ignore. “We are our brother’s keepers,” are the sentiments throughout the Seder liturgy. It is our human obligation to liberate those held captive by unjust powers. During our ceremony at the “altar” table, we chanted words cited by Rev. Martin Niemoller

“In the 1930’s in Germany, when they came for the Communists, I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Trade-Unionists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Catholic, I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up.”

Justice is what protestors are seeking; indictment of the police officers and deputies involved in the killing of Clarence Freeman. In our quest for liberty and justice in a Christian nation, injustice is the enemy to defeat to attain a more perfect America. Harris County Judicial system needs an overhaul. In the case of Clarence Freeman, Minister Quanel X said, “the Sheriff department acted like judge, jury, and executioner.

To the national media; Houstonians are seeking nationwide attention on Houston Harris County jailers hog tying and brutally killing Black, Brown, and poor White men incarcerated in Harris County Jail. There are over a dozen of cases of hog tying and death inflicted upon inmates by jailers.
