A vigil in front of the Mickey Leland Federal Building expressed solidarity with immigrant rights activist Elvira Arellano and called for a stop to raids and deportations on Monday.
Elvira Arellano is an immigrant rights activist who sought refuge from deportation for a year in a Chicago church. She decided to leave the church and rode to Los Angeles for a press conference at the Our Lady Queen of Angels Church. On her way to another press conference, the vehicle she was in was surrounded and she was arrested and shortly after was deported to Tijuana.
Elvira has been taking to press and says she will continue her fight for immigrant rights. Her 8-year old son Saulito, an American citizen, remains in the US under the custody of one of Elvira's advisors.
Elvira was scheduled to go on a caravan to Washington DC and planned to make a stop in Houston. The caravan is still planning on stopping here -- details to come on that.
On September 12 Houston will join cities across to the country to commemorate the National Day of Prayer for immigrant rights.
