US Department of State brings West African journalists to meet with Indymedia

Journalists from French speaking countries of Africa met with indymedia volunteers Nick and chickpea on Friday April 20th, and discussed indymedia history, autonomy, consensus process, non-hierarchical organizing, open-publishing, government repression of indymedia, activist-journalism, self-censorship, and Zapatismo.

PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES

The Department of State has outlined the following specific objectives for the project.

* Examine the rights and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy;

* Observe operational practices, standards, and institutions of the media in the United States;

* Gain insight into the social, economic, and political structures of the United States;

* Participate in academic seminars and a professional development symposium highlighting current trends and challenges in the media profession.
