Prior to the official opening of the first border social forum a march and reality border tour took place Thursday, the 12th. The march from a local park in Ciudad Juarez to one of the main bridges had about 500 people who were protesting NAFTA agreements and violence on the border. Representatives from a number of local grassroots organizations, from both sides were involved. Once at the center of the bridge was reached, a rally was held, attacking NAFTA and its effects on working people, on both sides of the border.
After the march, a reality border tour was given, visiting four sites in Ciudad Juarez, everyone got to see first hand the effects of NAFTA on working class Mexicanos. The killing fields of Juarez were also on the stop. More than just a looking visit, folks got out of the busses and engaged in political discussions on what was seen and way it is happening. At each stop local community people were eager to explain in their own words, their struggles.
