Girls and guys from Houston and around the country gathered at the Artery Friday, June 24 to kick off the Southern Girls Convention.
A crowd of mostly girls and some guys filled the Artery on Friday, June 24 to kick off the Southern Girls Convention. From 4pm-10pm, the party gave people the chance to register, socialize and enjoy some music and dancing before the workshops on Saturday.
Local singer/songwriter Sarah Golden accompanied by violinist Susan Jackson performed outside to a diverse crowd. The party and the music moved inside when DJ Shoe hit the stage. A group of pumped up SGC participants formed a circle and danced to punk rock tunes from Le Tigre and Bikini Kill.
Organizers were around throughout the night registering new participants and welcoming those coming from out of town. Jennifer, one of the main organizers, said they had 100 preregistered participants and 20 new people registered during the event. The people registered came from all around Texas, many from Austin and Denton, with other groups coming from Louisiana, Florida, and throughout the South.
The Southern Girls Convention runs from Saturday-Sunday with workshops and entertainment featuring women from the South and a variety of social justice issues.
