Civility Ordinance Set to Expand
by Nick Saturday, May. 06, 2006 at 11:08 AM

The Houston ACLU has received word that Houston City Council will meet about expanding the Civility Ordinance to new neighborhoods.

The Houston ACLU has received word that Houston City Council will meet about expanding the Civility Ordinance (other media coverage: 1, 2) to new neighborhoods. These ordinances (past coverage: 1, 2) prohibit people from sitting or lying on sidewalks between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m, and "aggressive panhandling." Currently they are in effect downtown and midtown, and may be on the verge of expanding into Avondale, Hyde Park, and Old Sixth Ward.

Randall Kallinen, the President of The Houston ACLU, says the Public Safety and Homeland Security Comittee of the City Council will be meeting Monday morning at 10am. He thinks it is likely they will move to vote Tuesday, when there is a public session.

People can go to the meeting Monday morning (the public can arrive and sign up to speak), go to the public session Tuesday afternoon (to reserve time to speak, call Monday morning 713 247 3555), and help to raise funds to bring lawsuits against these ordinances. Randall Kallinen can be contacted at (713) 320 - 3785.
