On Monday at 3:30 PM the airwaves surrounding reliant center were invaded with the clearest dead air I've ever had the fortune of hearing. The low power FM project KAMP (Katrina Action Media Project) set up at 1 pm in a air stream trailer in the parking lot behind the Astrodome. Volunteers worked to erect the antenna as well as putting together a make shift control room inside the trailer. Houston Indymedia reporters were able to go inside Reliant center and record audio interviews with several Katrina evacuees. Their stories will air on KAMP and their voices will be heard thanks to the efforts of the project's volunteers and the persistent work of it's organizers. I was surprised and joyed to find the spirit of the people inside the center to be upbeat in spite of all of the horrible things they have gone through in the recent past. Almost everyone was willing to talk about their experiences and seemed very happy to hear that the radio station was being setup on their behalf. The low power FM station will officially open tomorrow, but it is currently broadcasting an informative message that lets people know about the station's purpose and announces it's grand opening.
