RNC in NYC: A Hallibacon Pigout for Texas GOP delegates
by independent voter Friday, Sep. 03, 2004 at 11:37 AM

Early in the morning of Tuesday, August 31 in front of the New York Hilton, Executives of Halliburton Corporation showed their appreciation for the $18 billion in no-bid military contracts given to them by ex-Halliburton CEO, Richard "Dick" Cheney, Vice President of the United States. The Halliburton Corporation also threw a breakfast for Texas Republican National Convention delegates who were staying at the hotel.

This reporter enjoyed the privilege of being embedded with Mr. Cheney during the morning festivities.
Members of Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane, Code Pink, Global Exchange, and the Radical Tejas Bloc of the Houston Global Awareness Collective were on hand to provide assistance.

Halliburton executives and Mr. Cheney arrived at about the same time. The executives sporting pig-like snouts provided by Houston area cosmetic surgeons immediately began showering Dick with "hallibacon", $100 bills featuring Mr. Cheney's mug. In return, Dick distributed numerous no-bid contracts back to the executives.
The breakfast was extremely emotional and provided quite a morning treat for mid-town passersby. Halliburton executives broke into chants such as:

Halliburton Kellogg Brown and Root!
Go to Iraq and make some loot!

and:

We love money!
We love war!
We love Cheney even more!

The Miss Media Closes in.

The Miss Media Close...
hallibacon9lr2.jpg, image/jpeg, 600x315

Long after the independent media had gotten the facts, the Miss Media arrived in droves. ABC,CBS, NBC, FOX, and other networks all have their main headquarters within three blocks of the Hilton. AP, Reuters, and the New York Times sent reporters there as well. Music played, Money began to fly, and cameras began to click and whirl. Let the frenzy begin!
Looking out from Mr. Cheney's head, I saw little but a circle of cameras, still and video. They twisted their lenses not so much to make the image sharper but to communicate with the street actors. They competed with each other by smiling and gesturing with their equipment. Over here! No here! They came in about three waves of thirty cameras each. Carol of Code Pink warned me of each new arrival, as I could not see very well.
So that's what a full dose of the New York press feels like. I had to seriously decompress after that.

A tall Texas delegate strolled out and Fox news gave immediately gave the polite gentleman a lot of attention. This reporter patiently stood by to provide supplemental information should it be necessary. The FOXmen looked at me with furrowed brows. Curiously, some reporters pushed Texas Bloc members back from the scene, claiming they (the Miss Media) were "there to help them."
Medea Benjamin and the delegate had an interesting conversation. I don't think anyone bothered to distribute it.

Googling: "cheney hallibacon new york",will reveal that many media outlets placed the Hallibacon breakfast as the headline protest story for the day. At the same time, RNC protests were generally portrayed as ugly and potentially violent. Did anyone show the Billionaires for Bush? They were great.
Here is the USA Today web page. Great coverage but references to "Halliburton" and/or "Hallibacon" have been removed. What's the point?

The Agenda Setting Media

The Agenda Setting M...
hallibacon-nytlr2.jpg, image/jpeg, 600x616

This photo of the Hallibacon breakfast appeared on page 7 of the Wednesday New York Times section entitled "The Republicans".
The caption reads:
"Protestors wearing pig snouts demonstrated against Halliburton, which was holding a breakfast at the New York Hilton for the Texas delegation."
Page P7, a color pullout with reports and diagrams of protests, accompanied some rather staid black and white images of Republicans. I suppose the Times wanted this dynamic stuff to jump right out. I can't blame them.
As you can see, the fun-filled hallibacon image is surrounded with an image of an arrest and headlines containing the words: "volatile" and "hostile".
I doubt sincerely that the fellow shown being arrested was hostile. He was probably just lying on the pavement.
A few of us went for coffee afterwards. As we walked down 6th Ave., William Kristel, co-author of the Project for a New American Century passed us by. The P.N.A.C. is the noeconservative blueprint for perpetual war and domination of the world's resources. It is definitely worth a read. Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld endorsed it. What a coincidence. I've got to think on my feet in those situations. Damn!
