Who's the Pirate of the Airwaves? Clear Channel!
Clear Channel and a few other media giants who have gained control over increasinly larger percentages of radio stations and other media nationwide and globally. These robberbarons have been monopolizing and looting, while dumbing down and standardizing the so-called "news" and entertainment for their listeners across the nation. The rampant deregulation that has permeated the market since 1996 (when the Telecommunications Act was passed) has led to consolidation of many stations into a few media conglomerates. True local ownership has all but disappeared. Clear Channel Communications, which owned 40 radio stations in 1996, now controls over 1200 stations nationwide. If further deregulation occurs regarding the limits on cross-ownership, Clear Channel could move to expand its current television stake (36 stations), controlling multiple sources of news and entertainment in the same city. It is dangerous and anti-democratic for so few people to control the public's access to information and opinion.
We demand a permanent halt to the FCC's new proposed rules (rules which would allow companies like Clear Channel to dominate even larger portions of local media). The FCC was created to regulate the airwaves in the interest of the public, but instead they've allowed a few greedy media corporations to seize more than their share of pirate's booty.
The airwaves are a treasure of possibility for quality local, community programming, representing a true diversity of voices, stories and cultures.
Resist corporate control of ARRR media. Take back the airwaves! Let the FCC know you refuse to stand by while they sell off and divvy up these precious resources. Speak your mind at the FCC town hall meeting on localism Wednesday, January 28, 5:30 PM - Municipal Plaza Building - San Antonio.
Whose Airwaves? ARRR Airwaves!
