Dr. Shelley Sekula Rodriguez makes history as the spouse of a TV personality elected to public office. Has this ever occured before, or is there an affinity with KHOU 11?

Dr. Shelley Sekula Rodriguez, the widow of KHOU 11's Sylvan Rodriguez, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in April 2000, makes history as the first councilwoman who is a spouse (or widow) of a TV personality. She won by 56%; her opponent, Andrew C. Burks, Jr., ended up with 44% of the vote.

The seat that she ran for, At-Large Position #3, is being vacated by Orlando Sanchez because of term limits. Snachez, who would have became Houston's first Hispanic mayor, ended up with 48% of the vote, where incumbent Lee Brown has won by a narrow margin - 52%.

This is not the first time a spouse of a TV personality has ran for public office like the Houston City Council. Saundria Chase Gray, wife of KHOU-TV 11 anchor Jerome Gray, ran for District D in 1995 and 1997, where Jew Don Boney won both times. Currently, the District D seat is being vacated due to voter imposed term limits; his successor, community activist and radio personality Ada Edwards, received 53% of the vote. Her opponent, real estate developer/businessman Gerald Womack, ended up with 47%.
