This week in Guatemala tens of thousands of peasants, teachers, students, unionists and leftists took to the streets to protest Guatemalan Congress's passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement. Protestors, journalists and civil organizations were greeted by "1980's style" repression from the Guatemalan Army and Civilian National Police. At least one protestor (of two slain overall) was killed as the police fired live rounds at a demonstration in the highland region of Huehuetenango.

Breaking News:US lifts military ban on Guatemala

Protests have intensified as Guatemalan civil society fears the deal will harm small farmers and businesses. The protesters want a referendum on the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), as well as the resignation of the interior minister and police chief. CAFTA has sparked protests in several countries in central America. It has yet to be ratified by the US, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

Media coverage of both the Guatemalan protests and the CAFTA agreement have been very limited in the mainstream US press and Guatemalan media covering the protests have recived death threats. You can find more coverage from: Chiapas CMI, FTAA IMC, Freedom Sojurn
